About
The Geist Lake Coalition was established in 2000 and evolved from an entity know as the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (GHPOA) Lake Committee. The original Lake Committee had been formed back in 1990 to address problems and concerns of GHPOA homeowners concerning Geist Lake.
As development around the lake advanced, it was discovered that other neighborhoods were facing many of the same questions, problems and issues that the Lake Committee had already tackled. In order to be more effective at disseminating information and to give everyone a forum for expressing opinions on usage of the lake, the Geist Lake Coalition was formed in 2000 to include not just GHPOA neighborhoods, but any neighborhood with waterfront property, or in the immediate vicinity.

What is the Geist Lake Coalition?
It is a nonprofit coalition of the neighborhoods surrounding Geist Lake.
What is the Coalition’s reason for being ?
The Coalition’s Mission Statement:
The Geist Lake Coalition is committed to providing safe and responsible recreational use of the lake by all constituencies and to the preservation and improvement of land values and quality of life for all lake neighborhood residents and users through responsible stewardship of Geist Lake’s resources. Add water quality issues to the top of that list as well!
Why have interest in the Geist Lake Coalition?
Any homeowner or user of Geist Lake should take an interest in the Geist Lake Coalition. While your neighborhood associations deal with issues on the land, the Coalition is devoted to issues that arise specifically from the usage of Geist Lake. The goal of the Coalition is to provide an organized forum for addressing issues that are unique to lake living.
Where did the Geist Lake Coalition come from?
The Geist Lake Coalition actually evolved from an entity known as the Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (GHPOA) Lake Committee. The Lake Committee had been formed in 1990 to address problems and concerns that GHPOA homeowners had with respect to Geist Lake. GHPOA represents approximately 2500 homeowners in most of the neighborhoods on the south end of the Lake such as the Admirals, Feather Cove, Masthead, Beamreach, Diamond Pointe and others. As development around the Lake advanced, it was discovered that other neighborhoods were facing many of the same questions, problems and issues that the GHPOA Lake Committee had tackled. In order to be more effective at disseminating information and to give everyone a forum for expressing opinions on usage of the Lake, the Geist Lake Coalition was formed to include not just GHPOA neighborhoods, but any neighborhood with waterfront property, or in the immediate vicinity.
Who runs the GLC?
The Coalition is structured with 3 Founding Directors, 1 Treasurer, Program Managers and Project Managers. All of these individuals are volunteers from their neighborhoods who have a keen interest in carrying out the mission statement of the Coalition. With that said, the GLC is a very flat organization and we want additional recruits to get involved. We are goal-oriented and if you have a desire in making an impact to the surrounding community jump on in with us and be creative and passionate. We will help get traction for your ideas, or projects.
See our Coalition Staff page.
Is the Coalition a secret organization?
Not at all. We are actively interested in any Geist vicinity resident to join us in order to make a positive impact on our lake community. Flat out, anyone with passion and interest is welcome.
Does the Coalition have broad, sweeping dictatorial powers?
Think United Nations only without a Security Council, money and certainly no pay. The Geist Lake Coalition has no legislative, governmental, association or any other authority. We attempt to effect change through dissemination of information and community action. Our predecessor organization was responsible for the creation and placement of the signs at the Marina and Olio Road launch ramps that summarize some of Indiana’s boating regulations. We maintain a Web site, www.geistlake.org, that is an excellent resource for all kinds of boating information and water quality issues with the lake and the watershed area. We also provide a linkage to law enforcement, fire and rescue departments, businesses and homeowners about issues affecting the Lake and water quality. A great concrete example is the www.geistwatershed.com organization. This group is a direct spin-off from the Geist Lake Coalition and has already engaged in water quality related projects with the State. Blue-green algae, invasive water vegitation and the Zebra Mussels issues and concerns are hot on our priority lists.
Safety and water quality are our main focus areas and we will get involved in promoting these agendas, simply put!
